South Koreans head to polls as North Korea readies rocket

Updated 11 April 2012, 15:58 AEST

South Koreans are voting in a closely-contested parliamentary election as North Korea prepares for a controversial rocket launch.

While national security has been a concern as the launch looms closer, observers say voters are more worried about domestic economic issues like rising education and housing costs.

But an issue dividing both the public and the parties is the recently-ratified free trade agreement with the United States backed by the ruling Saenuri party but opposed by the Democratic United Party, who want to re-negotiate the deal.

Presenter: Liam Cochrane

Speaker: Peter Beck, the Korea Representative from the Asia Foundation
