Pakistan unrest over court ruling barring Sharif

Updated February 27, 2009 19:55:28

In Pakistan, there has been further unrest after the Supreme Court barred the main opposition leader, Nawaz Sharif, from public office.

Mr Sharif's brother, Shahbaz, also lost his post as chief minister of Punjab province, where the government suspended the provincial parliament.

The Sharifs say the court decision banning them for their past convictions was orchestrated President Asif Ali Zardari.

Thousands of Sharif supporters have rallied in cities across Pakistan setting cars ablaze and torching images of Mr Zardari.

Mr Sharif and Mr Zardari have long fought over the future of Pakistan, which is teetering under financial crisis, Islamist extremism and weak government.
