Amnesty raps Australia over indigenous rights

Updated March 16, 2009 20:19:56

Amnesty International says Australia flagrantly breaches its human rights obligations by continuing to suspend race discrimination laws in some indigenous communities.

It's a key finding in Amnesty's 28-page briefing to the U-N Human Rights Committee in New York this week.. where a range of groups will present their view, with Australia responding later in the month. Amnesty says Australia's record is strong in many areas of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. But there are concerns, particularly on indigenous issues.
