In a further sign of warming relations between Taiwan and China, Taiwan will be granted observer status at the World Health Organisation's supreme governing body - the World Health Assembly.

The announcement came hours after the World Health Organisation elevated the swine influenza threat from level four to level five, indicating a pandemic could be imminent.

Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou says WHO access will help the island address the spread of swine flu.
