Swine flu could do more damage in the south

Updated April 30, 2009 20:17:30

The man who documented Asia's response to the SARS epidemic has warned that the current swine flu virus could do the most damage in the southern hemisphere.

Karl Greenfeld was the editor of Time Asia during the SARS crisis and the author of "China Syndrome: The True Story of the 21st Century's First Great Epidemic".

He believes the swine flu which is grabbing headlines around the world is unlikely to cause great harm in the northern hemisphere and he thinks the response from the media and authorities there is overblown.

But he says the real concern now is the spread of the virus through the south ... which could hit just at the start of flu season.

Presenter: Joanna McCarthy
Speaker: Karl Greenfeld, the author of "China Syndrome: The True Story of the 21st Century's First Great Epidemic".
