Australian aid budget not good enough says Greens leader

Updated May 15, 2009 20:40:07

Australia's veteran Green party leader, Bob Brown, says the Rudd government has failed in its foreign aid responsibilities, despite a slight increase for aid in this week's Federal budget.

Senator Brown says Australia should be sharing much more of its wealth, particularly amid forecasts that the global recession will force tens of millions into poverty. Senator Brown says Australian aid should also include extending renewable energy capacity to regional developing countries, in particular to East Timor which uses heavily polluting diesel plants and plans new heavy fuel oil plants.

The Greens are a minor party in Australia but they and several other Senators control Parliament's upper house and could force changes to the Rudd government's new budget.
