Lack of opportunity, not racism behind attacks on Chinese in PNG

Updated May 21, 2009 19:31:24

The looting and burning of Asian owned shops in Papua New Guinea has focused attention of tensions surrounding Chinese immigration in the Pacific.

In 2007, anti-Chinese riots hit Solomon Islands' capital Honiara and the year before Tonga's capital Nuku'alofa saw pro-democracy rioters target Chinese-owned businesses. And now, PNG is suffering under the same situation.

Pius Bonjui, a long serving member of Radio Australia's Tok Pisin Service and originally from the Sepik area, tells Campbell Cooney that there has not traditionally been any tension between local people and Chinese families who have been in the country for many years.
