Conservationists look to protect marine life from commercial fishing
Updated
Since the development of cheaper fishing gear and bigger, faster boats, thousands of kilometres of nets and lines are set in the world's oceans each day.
Modern fishing gear is extremely strong and efficient at catching the desired fish species .. unfortunately, this includes anything else in its path.. including baby fish, seabirds, marine turtles, dolphins, small whales. WWF says a staggering amount of marine life is hauled up with the catch, and then usually thrown overboard, dead or dying. Now, the conservation organisation WWF has launched an international competition to find the best fishing gear that causes the least damage.
