Ceasefire holds in SLanka's Tamil Tiger battle
Updated
There is calm in the north-eastern part of Sri Lanka at the end of a two-day government initiated ceasefire.
The army and Tamil Tiger rebels agreed to hold fire until midnight Tuesday to allow tens of thousands of trapped civilians to leave the war zone, but it is unclear how many have left safely.
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam say they want a long-term truce supervised by the international community. But Sri Lanka's government has quickly rejected the offer and told the guerrillas to first lay down their arms before any negotiations can be held.
It comes as Sri Lanka bans Norway from acting as a mediator in any future peace talks.
