Convention tackles ship recycling pollution
Updated
The business of recycling old ships is a big part of several national economies and a core part of the maritime sector.
Critics say it's also one of the biggest sources of hazardous waste pollution in the world, and an industry with a shocking health and safety record. Until now, it's had no systematic regulation or monitoring. Last Friday in Hong Kong, key players signed the first international convention to tackle the issue. Some say it's a major step forward - while others charge that it fails to take any serious measures against the problem.
