Malaysia considers making English compulsory for school leavers

English could soon become a compulsory component of final examinations for high school leavers in Malaysia, but there are fears that such a move would disadvantage students from rural areas.
The Malaysian government is concerned that the pass rate in English is falling and wants to act soon. But there is already opposition to the use of English in teaching other subjects, such as maths, and critics say the idea should only be considered as a final option.
