Bi-election shows Thaksin still popular

The result of an important by-election in Thailand on the weekend was an indication that fugitive Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra still exerted influenced in some rural regions.
The Pheu Thai party, backed by Mr Thaksin, won convincingly in the Sakon Nakhon by-election, against the Bhum Jai Thai party, headed by a former Thaksin ally. Thai reports said many of Thaksin's relatives were in the province, helping Pheu Thai campaign.
