Taiwan and China open direct top-level contact

In a sign that that relationship is improving, China's President Hu Jintao sent a congratulatory message to Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou, on being elected Chairman of the ruling Kuomintang party.

Beijing has long viewed the KMT as the preferred party to deal with, compared with former President Chen Shui-bian's pro-independence Democratic Progress Party. As party chairman, President Ma will have greater influence, including pushing through government bills with ease.
