New US lead on nuclear disarmament
Updated
The United States has drafted a UN Security Council resolution calling on all countries with nuclear weapons to get rid of them.
Washington hopes the text will be approved by a special session on September 24 when the 15-nation council meets on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, where President Obama makes his UN debut appearance. Diplomats say the US draft is yet another example of the sharp shift on disarmament policy from the previous Bush administration.
