Afghanistan war still worth fighting: Stephen Smith

The United States is expected to receive a formal request later this week from General Stanley McChrystal, the top US military commander in Afghanistan, asking for more troops.

A report by General McCrystal gave a sobering assessment of the war, saying that without a boost to US troop numbers, the international forces could fail in their mission. Australia's Foreign Minister Stephen Smith has given his response to the McCrystal report and says Australia sees Afghanistan as a necessary battle.
