Nepal's war death tally 16,000, as abuses go ignored

The Nepal government has increased the official death toll for the region's Maoist 10-year insurgency to 16,000 - following recommendations from an investigating taskforce.

The United Nations recently sent a letter to Nepal's Prime Minister calling for further investigations into human rights violations during the war, in particular the torture and disappearance of many suspected Maoists at a Kathmandu army base.
