Changing views on death penalty in Japan

A Japanese High Court has commuted the death sentence of Japanese mobster Tetsuya Shiroo, who had been convicted of murdering the Mayor of Nagasaki, on the island of Kyushu.
Some legal experts say the decision signals an acknowledgment of international pressure to end the death penalty in Japan. They say it is also a sign of change from the Japan's new government, which has appointed an outspoken death penalty opponent as its Justice Minister.
