Former Australian High Commissioner in India says relations between Canberra and New Delhi finally take off, after languishing for decades, but not without a few hiccups.

John McCarthy has just retired as Australia's representative in India, after a career of four decades, including periods as ambassador to the United States, Japan, Indonesia and Thailand.
