State of emergency declared in the southern Philippines

Military officals in the Southern Philippines have recovered the bodies of 36 people abducted and kidnapped on Monday, in what authorities believe was a politically motivated attack.

The military says the attackers were trying to stop a woman from filing her husbands nomination to run for provincial governor in next year's elections. Nominations for the 2010 elections opened last week, and observers say it's likely there will be more violence before the country goes to the polls.
