A top Malaysian economist says Australia has evolved a unique development model but doesn't do enough to promote it.

Dr Mahani Zainal Abidin is Director-General of the Institute of Strategic and International Studies in Malaysia and a frequent advisor to the Malaysian government. She says Australia has managed to avoid the so-called "resource curse" by developing international-level standards throughout the economy making it a model, she says, for countries like Malaysia. Dr Mahani has also told Radio Australia that ASEAN faces a challenge in the different rates of economic growth among its members .. while she says in Indonesia, the gap between promise and practice could threaten the country's prospects.
