In the southern Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City, two people have been executed by firing squad, for producing and circulating counterfeit currency.

Police say 27 year old Tran Hoai Nam and 28 year old Nguyen Van Phi were arrested in October 1999 in neighbouring Dong Nai province.

They were convicted of printing and using false Vietnamese notes with a total value of 50,000 dollars.

Counterfeiters usually face the death penalty in Vietnam, which has seen a flood of imitation currency notes from China in recent years.

The Vietnamese media reports that thirty people have been executed this year alone, for drug-trafficking, murder and child rape in Vietnam.
