In Tonga, disaster officials say they are relieved to have been spared widespread destruction from Cyclone Ami.

The National Disaster Management Office says the cyclone changed course and did not come within 150 kilometres of any Tongan islands as weather forecasters had predicted.

No significant damage to infrastructure was reported, with power quickly restored after minor disruption in the outer islands.

A Tongan official says fruit bearing trees and probably root crops have been affected but the Disaster Management Office is still waiting on reports from agricultural officials.
