The Philippine government has ordered its ambassador to Israel to return home after remarks comparing Israeli immigration officials with Nazis.

Ambassador Antonio Modena said Israeli immigration police were like Nazi Gestapo in the way they treated foreign workers.

An Israeli opposition MP was offended by Mr Modena's remarks and demanded a public apology.

However, the ambassador says he also received congratulatory calls from Israelis for his statement.

Philippine officials said the travel authority for the ambassador's return was issued long before the publication of his comments.
