Danish authorities have reported the country's first case of H5 bird flu virus in poultry.

They say about one hundred chickens, ducks and geese on a private farm in Hundslev, on Fyn island have been destroyed.

The vet responsible for the region, Peter Bagge says it is not yet know if this is the most virulent strain of the virus, H5N1.

He says further test results are required to confirm or deny this.

Authorities have set up a three-kilometre wide protection zone, and a 10-kilometre observation area around where the infected birds were found.

Denmark's Ministry for Consumer Affairs says the outbreak will have consequences for Danish poultry exports to countries outside the European Union.

It says it fears that countries outside the union will impose a partial or complete ban on Danish poultry products.

The Ministry says exports of poultry originating from outside the observation zones can continue to European Union members.

Denmark has reported several cases of the most virulent H5N1 strain of bird flu in wild birds.

But this is the first time the Scandinavian country has reported the H5 virus in poultry.
