Niue is to withdraw an application to host the Pacific Islands Forum next year.

The island earlier sought backing to host the gathering after losing the rights in 2004 when Cyclone Heta wrecked much of its infrastructure, including accommodation facilities.

This year's summit was to be held in Tonga, but following the death of King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV in September, the meeting was switched to Nadi in Fiji.
