The New Zealand opposition is demanding Niue take responsibility for its own economic predicament, even if it means abandoning its independence.

The opposition spokesman for foreign affairs and trade, John Hayes, says the dwindling population cannot sustain the nation's current set-up, which he says is driving Niue's culture into extinction.

Mr Hayes says the people of Niue need to come up with a solution on their own.

Mr Hayes told Radio Australia's Kerri Webb that despite the best of intentions, the experiment of nationhood has failed.

"The people of Nuie need a fundamental rethink about what nationhood actually means to them because the road that we're on at the moment is sending Nuie's culture towards extinction," he said.

"We need Nuieans to take ownership of their circumstances and not look to New Zealand aid, or AusAID, or anybody else".
