The Papua New Guinea Government has committed $US340,000 to assist with relief operations following last week's earthquake and tsunami in Solomon Islands.

The National newspaper reports the government responded to an urgent request from the Solomon Islands government by making available a PNG Defence Force aircraft to deliver supplies from Honiara to Choiseul Province.

Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare says it is the least Papua New Guinea can do to help relief operations after last week's twin disaster.

The Arava aircraft will land supplies in worst affected areas with smaller airstrips, in locations that larger C130 airforce planes from New Zealand and Australia can't land.

The PNG government has also appealed to all Papua New Guineans living in Solomon Islands to register with the High Commission in Honiara.
