A new study has found fine particles emitted by some laser printers could be as dangerous to people's lungs as inhaling from a cigarette.

The study by Queensland University of Technology researchers found indoor particle levels in air conditioned offices increased five fold during office hours due to printer use.

Professor Lidia Morawska says the study serves as a warning to employers.

"Printers should operate in environments where there is as much ventilation as possible and as far as possible from where people's desks are located".
