Anote Tong has been re-elected as president of Kiribati with an overwhelming majority.

The electoral commissioner, Rine Ueara, says President Tong received more than 15,500 votes.

His closest rival, Nabuti Mwemwenikarawa, received just over 8,000 votes.

The two other contenders received less than 400 votes each.

Just 50 per cent of the 43,000 registered voters on Kiribati voted in the election, after supporters of the main opposition nominees called for a boycott.

The president's brother, Harry Tong, and Tetaua Taitai failed to secure a parliamentary nomination for the vote, sparking demonstrations ahead of Wednesday's ballot.
