Cambodia is hoping to have eight luxury golf courses by 2010, in a bid to lure high-end tourists who enjoy the sport.

Cambodian golf officials say four golf courses were completed in 2007, two of which opened in the popular tourist town of Siem Reap.

The Secretary General of the Cambodia Golf Association, Suos Yara, says a third course, backed by South Korean investors, is expected to open in Siem Reap in 2009.

He says three other multi-million-dollar golf projects are also under construction near the capital Phnom Penh and along the border with Vietnam.

Another is planned near the seaside resort of Sihanoukville.

Tourists to Siem Reap are attracted by the Angkor heritage site, Cambodia's most popular tourist destination.

Suos Yara say the golf industry can capitalise on these destinations because many adults like golf to be part of their package tours.

Cambodia's profile as a golfing destination got a major boost when the Phokeethra Country Club in Siem Reap hosted the country's first international golfing event in November.
