New Solomon Islands prime minister Dr Derek Sikua is calling for the Regional Assistance Mission RAMSI to expand its role in rural areas of the country.

About 80 per cent of people in the Solomons live in rural areas, which have seen very little growth or development since independence almost 30 years ago.

Dr Sikua has just returned from a tour of Papua New Guinea, Australia and New Zealand.

He says he discussed the proposed expansion of RAMSI's role with the leaders of the three countries, and also outlined the key areas where RAMSI could be of help in rural communities.

"In the health sector and in the education sector as well as in infrastructure and other sectors to do with income generation and economic activities," he said.
