Authorities in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal have largely lifted a ban on the trade, transport and consumption of poultry, imposed a week ago as part of efforts to stamp out a bird flu outbreak.

State officials says they now consider the outbreak, which began last month, under control.

The World Health Organisation had said the rapid spread of bird flu throughout much of West Bengal was the most serious outbreak yet in India.

Almost four million birds are said to have been culled since the H5N1 strain of the virus was first detected in the state.
