Bangladeshi farmers have been urged to speed up the rice harvest, ahead of a powerful cyclone expected in the coming days.

Dhaka has also issued a warning for Chittagong and other ports, and urged coastal residents to prepare for evacuation.

The warning came as Cyclone Nargis was around 1,200 kilometres off the Chittagong coast. It's expected to gain strength in the Bay of Bengal and reach Category Four strength.

The government has called on farmers to harvest their rice as quickly as possible, as Bangladesh continues to recover from food shortages caused by last year's floods and November's Cyclone Sidr.
