The Melanesian Spearhead Group has confirmed the appointment of its first director general as Papua New Guinea's trade advisor Rima Ravusiro.

Our Pacific correspondent, Campbell Cooney, reports that while the Melanesian Spearhead Group has been in existence for more than 20 years, Mr Ravusiro will be its first ever director general.

Last week the MSG leaders confirmed his appointment during their summit in Vanuatu.

Before his appointment, Mr Ravusiro worked as an advisor to PNG's Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Immigration, and was previously employed by the Pacific Islands Forum secretariat.

His position is to be funded for the next three years by the government of China, which also provided the money to build the MSG secretariat building in Port Vila.
