Four hundred and fifty eight Australians have been included in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours list - from charity workers to sports stars and the former prime minister, John Howard.

Mr Howard heads the list of eight people to receive the top award as Companions of the Order of Australia.

Also included is the former West Australian premier Geoff Gallop, Channel Seven television owner Kerry Stokes, Unionist Bill Kelty, and entertainment king Reg Grundy.

Mr Grundy has produced some of Australia's favourite television shows over the past fifty years - from Wheel of Fortune to Neighbours and The Restless Years.

In a statement, Mr Grundy says he has been left speechless by the award and is deeply moved.

The former Liberal Senator Peter Baume also joins the elite club.

Now an emeritus professor, he has paid tribute to those who have fostered his research activities.

Cricketer Justin Langer has been made a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia.
