Pakistan says its security forces have arrested 52 people since an operation against Islamic militants in the troubled Khyber tribal district, bordering Afghanistan, began on saturday.

A local government official says the detainees include seven men from Lashkar-e-Islam, a hardline group that denies links to the Taliban.

Visiting US Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher says the Khyber operation highlights the dangers posed by Islamic militants.

Meanwhile around 100 college students staged a rally in Peshawar condemning the operation and calling for its immediate end.

They say the offensive was launched at the behest of the United States and was causing food shortages.
