Tonga's King George Tupou V has announced he's moving the monarchy to a more figurehead role.

The move comes ahead of his formal coronation this week, and before elections in 2010 that for the first time will see a majority of MPs democratically elected.

Prime minister Fred Sevele told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat program, the island nation is heading towards a British-style constitutional monarchy.

Among many other events, celebrations for this week's multi-million dollar coronation will include three balls, a military parade and a fireworks display.

Pacific nations are expected to send senior representatives to attend.
