In northern Pakistan, rescue parties have begun scaling the world's second highest mountain, K-2, in a desperate search for survivors of an avalanche that's killed at least nine climbers.

Reports say that a number of expeditions were on a high altitude section known as the "death zone" when the disaster struck on Friday.

Reinhold Messner is one of the world's greatest mountaineers and conquered K-2 in 1979.

He says the chances for any of the climbers getting back down aren't good.

"They try now to reach the other side where there's another expedition and if this expedition prepared the way up to the summit, there's a chance for them to survive, otherwise I don't see they will be safe," he said.
