Cook Islands PM boosts internet governance

Cook Islands Prime Minister Jim Marurai wants Internet governance to be his legacy for the country and its 14,000 people.

Our reporter in Cook Islands, Ulamila Wragg, says he made the pledge at the Internet Society annual conference.

Mr Marurai did not mince his words when he said his goal is to make Communications Technologies a dynamic sector in the Cook Islands.

Apart from supporting the development of other parts of the economy, he wants ICT to create a better educated workforce, and forge stronger integration with the global economy.

Mr Marurai announced the setup of a government ICT unit, with staff creating websites for government ministries.

Unit chief Maureen Hilyard says that apart from setting up websites, the unit is also creating an awareness and understanding of internet governance within the public service
