Tonga has re-imposed emergency regulations and extended their powers in the capital Nuku'alofa, nearly two years after a violent rampage left eight people dead.

Emergency regulations were first imposed following the deadly riots in November 2006 which left 150 businesses displaced.

The powers had been extended every 30 days until they quietly lapsed last month.

However, a statement from the prime minister's office says new regulations were imposed on September 5 for another month.

In the statement, Prime Minister Fred Sevele says a state of danger still exists.

The new powers allow police to stop and search people without a warrant, and to enter any vehicle including ships and aircraft to seize evidence.
