The Indian Coast Guard says a ship with 22 crew members making its way from the Suez canal to Mumbai has been hijacked off the coast of Yemen.

It says the Hong Kong registered merchant ship is being taken to Somalia.

The crew includes 18 Indians, two Filipinos, a Bangladeshi and a Russian.

Indian authorities say they were alerted by Singapore's Information Sharing Centre, which received a call from an Indian cadet saying 15 pirates had boarded the vessel.

Fredi Stolzenberg from the tanker operator Stolt Shipping says the pirates have not demanded a ransom and all the crew on board are safe.
