There's been a call for Vanuatu to investigate the possiblity of rice farming because of the high price its fetching on world commodity markets.

Former Agriculture officer Jean Baptist has written to the Vanuatu Daily Post calling on the government to consider rice as a potential commodity to compliment fluctuating copra exports.

Mr Baptist says Vanuatu could rely on foreign partner China, for planting advice.

He says a team of Chinese agriculturalists based in Santo proved that soil in Vanuatu could produce 10 tonnes of rice per hectare compared to 2.5 tonnes in Australia.
