The European Union observers say they are confident Russia has begun its withdrawal from Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia.

The monitors in Georgia say Russia began by dismanlting a checkpoint near the northwest town of Gori.

Under the French brokered peace plan, Russia has to complete withdrawal from the so-called security zones in the region by Friday.

The head of the EU monitoring mission in Georgia Hans Joerg Haber says that he expects that Russia will meet the deadline.

"We really have evidence that the Russian withdrawal has begun, and we're confident that the engagements will be kept and that the withdrawal will be completed by the 10th of October".
