There has been intense fighting with Taliban and Al Qaeda militants in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Afghan and British forces say 100 militants were killed in Afghanistan's Helmand province.

Some of the dead were part of a group that had been seen massing outside of the town of Lashkar Gah for several days, and were killed in air strikes that stopped them from attacking the provincial capital.

Around 40 more were killed in a three-day operation in the nearby Nad Ali district that wound up on Saturday.

Pakistani helicopter gunships attacked a meeting of militants linked to Al-Qaeda near the border with Afghanistan, killing at least 35.

Security officials say the assault northwestern district of Orakzai came two days after a suicide bomber killed 40 anti-Taliban people at a tribal gathering in the same district.
