Media freedom groups and foreign diplomats have condemned Vietnam's jailing of a newspaper reporter who helped expose a major state corruption scandal.

Nguyen Viet Chien, a journalist with the Thanh Nien Daily, has been jailed for two years over his reporting on a major graft scandal in a transport ministry unit.

The court also jailed a police officer for one year for providing the media with information on the case.

Another reporter Nguyen Van Hai and a police general were also found guilty but allowed to walk free.

The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists says the sentences are shameful.

A US embassy statement says the sentences contradict the commitments of Vietnamese officials on freedom of the press.
