In Australia's Northern Territory a project employing indigenous rangers to reduce carbon pollution is being expanded across the north of the continent.

The West Arnhem Land Fire Abatement project involves deliberately lighting fires in the cooler months of the year, preventing more than 400-thousand tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released by wildfires.

Ranger Matthew Ryan says the project suits much of northern Australia.

He says "It's a good program. It could go towards north Queensland if, I mean either there is a lot of interest in there, it's just a matter of talking to the government over there".

"Even like in Western Australia I know there is a lot of interest in there. We would love to see the program expand right across the Top End. Cover the whole Top End".
