An Indian Navy warship has attacked and sunk a pirate ship off the coast of Somalia.

The Indian frigate INS Tabar, one of dozens of warships protecting shipping lanes in the area, attacked the pirate ship after coming under fire.

The incident came as shipping groups reported a new surge in hijackings off Somalia and the International Maritime Bureau said pirates based in the lawless African nation are now "out of control".

Four ships including a Saudi Arabian supertanker have been hijacked over the past five days.

Saudi Arabia's foreign minister has confirmed that the owners of the hijacked oil tanker are holding talks with Somali pirates on a possible ransom payment.

25 crew members are on board the Sirus Star, which is carrying more than $US100 million worth of crude oil.
