The Australian prime minister, Kevin Rudd, has warned leaders at the APEC summit in Peru's capital, Lima, not to ignore climate change because of the current financial crisis.

The issue of global warming has taken a back seat at this year's forum as leaders focus on the the economic turmoil facing world markets.

But Mr Rudd says ignoring climate change now will lead to further financial hardship in the future.

"Some have said that the financial crisis means that governments should postpone acting on climate change, but Australian government does not share that view," he said.

"Climate change represents a very real threat to global economic growth, jobs and prosperity...taking strong and urgent action will help safeguard economic and environmental stability." Mr Rudd said.
