The head of the FBI says the most serious terrorist threat for the United States comes from al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula in Yemen.

In the wake of the foiled "underwear bomb" plot this week, the FBI director Robert Mueller fronted a congressional hearing to outline the current threat.

"al-Qaeda affiliates especially al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula represents the top counter terrorism threat to the nation."

US officials say that that no changes are necessary in domestic airport security but the ongoing challenge is security in foreign airports, which doesn't match the stringent levels in America.

The FBI is now studying the underwear bomb device that was due to be detonated on a US bound plane while the Pentagon says it will send military trainers to Yemen to help counter al-Qaeda militants.
