Japan's Crown Prince Naruhito has begun a week-long visit to Thailand, Cambodia and Laos - his first official visit to the three countries.

The crown prince is expected to arrive in Bangkok this afternoon, where he'll meet Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

He will also visit a Japanese school and the Chao Phraya River, which caused last year's massive floods.

In Cambodia and Laos, the crown prince will meet the countries' respective prime ministers and visit world heritage sites.

Japan and Southeast Asian nations have been holding Mekong-Japan summits since 2009 to promote economic development in the region.

The crown prince last held talks with the region's leaders when they visited Tokyo for the fourth summit in April.

Crown Prince Naruhito returns to Japan on Sunday.
